How many modes are there?
There are 3 modes to choose from.
Does it assemble and use easily?GC-1011 is free to assemble it. It's also very easy to use.
Is the coil waterproof?Yes, it can be used on the beach. But be careful of the control box, the box is not waterproof!
Would this be suitable for a 5-year old child, or would it be too bulky/heavy? This metal detector is only 1.5lbs. it's lightweight for adults and teenagers. But we'd recommend the GC-1011 for a 5-year-old. GC-1011 is more light and easier for kids.
whats the maximum depth it can detect?It would depend on many factors. First how big the buried object is. For example, a quarter may get 6" while a garbage can lid might come in at 18".The second is how much discrimination you use. On all metal, you will get more depth but pick up more trash items. Under ideal circumstances, you would never even pick up that trash can lid if you had iron nulled out.Other factors are too many to name but soil condition, moisture of grass, and sensitivity settings are all going to count towards depth.

Our 11 year old grandson loves this metal detector. This one has a kid friendly control panel that is fun and easy to understand, is lightweight, waterproof, and it fits him very well plus is adjustable for height. It comes apart and stores easily in the included case. They also included some tools for digging. He had it up and running quickly by himself and covered the complete house at our holiday gathering. It's great that the battery was included so he could play with it right away. The metal detector was certainly finding metal under the floorboards and making a huge racket! My only concern is that the arm rest part that folds out is rather thin plastic so I don't think that part will take any abuse at all. Considering that this metal detector works very well and is so much fun for kids, I think the price is worth it.

I got this for my 7 year old son. I have been metal detecting for years and I have been looking for a kids first metal detector for a while now. This detector is awesome for kids! It is easy to assemble and is not difficult for children to understand how to use it. This detector has a decent range, I found a quarter a 6 inches.

What kid doesn't love treasure hunting? This metal detector makes the process easy for a kid to start getting into the hobby without investing too much. It has basic metal type discrimination, and comes with a cute little set of tools for digging. It uses sounds and visuals to detect and the focus button on the handle makes narrowing down the location easy. It's lightweight enough for young kids, but the downside is it's not super robust, but as long as it's used as intended I don't think that would be a problem.
In short my kid loved it, and can't wait to get outside and find some buried treasure!!

I got this for my 10 year old son. My older son has one from a different brand and they work similarly, however the other brand was less expensive by $20. It is easy to assemble and worked great at finding surface level metal. I like that it comes with a bag to store everything in and tools to help dig. I plan on taking my song on the trails by our house to really test it out to find those hidden treasures and in our beach trips.
I really like how light weight it is, and adjustable for height. It did seem to eat up the battery quickly, but that could be a weak battery that they provide. Overall a well made product that my son rally enjoys.

I tested the GC1011 metal detector for kids and found it to be lightweight and easy to use, although the instructions were a little hard to understand. The kit comes with a small plastic spade and rake, a carrying bag, and a 9v battery. It's easy to assemble with a single thumbscrew and breaks down into two pieces to store in the bag. The bottom section is adjustable for children at different heights by turning the yellow plastic piece and extending or retracting the pole.
I tested it and found that it seemed to work pretty well, given the price ($79.99 at the time of this review, which seems a little high to me.) There is one button to cycle through the three sensitivity levels and a small "Pinpoint" button on the handle to help narrow down where to dig.
This is made for and marketed for kids aged 5-12 and is probably a good way to expose them to the hobby - especially if you hide some things for the younger ones to "find." However, there are cheaper options for entry-level detectors out there.

My wife and I love playing with our metal detectors so much that we decided to get this for our grandkids. It is a great first metal detector for kids! It's easy to assemble, colorful and even though it's lightweight, it still has an arm support! Plus, instead of using an LED meter, it has different faces that light up to indicate you've found something - it's actually really cool and perfect for kids! And it even works! I held it over a quarter just to test it and the dollar sign face lit up! I think the grandkids will love it!

This is labeled as a child's toy but adults can use it as well. It is adjustable and so it is good for any reasonable height person. This is not going to find you a 5 ft buried treasure but it will find things that are surface or slightly below surface. It even detects our septic tank. Will be lots of fun.
